Hello, my laptop (a Dell Latitude running Vista) has been getting slower and slower lately. The boot-up process is painful, and even while working I notice that it's visibly slower than it used to be. Maximize/minimize look more like page-loads and I even have to wait a second or two after I click on something before it'll play the click sound. The computer's only about 6 months old so I don't think I've cluttered it up too much, but who knows. You guys helped me out a lot before so I figured I should have you look at the HijackThis log.

I ran SpyBot, which didn't find any problems but on a side note I couldn't get Ad-Aware to work. Every time I try to update it crashes and gets corrupted. Is this a Vista problem or am I doing something wrong?

Anyhow, here's the Hijack log:

Hi again,

OK, let's check for Malware:

Please go HERE to run Panda's TotalScan
  • Select the bubble for Full scan
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • Then the scan will begin
  • When the scan completes, click the Save button on the right of Scan details
  • Save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the TotalScan report
Next:

1. Download this file -
ComboFix
2. Double click ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Well, I didn't get too far yet. When I tried to download the Panda scan my Avast anti-spyware program told me it contained viruses, specifically:

www.nanoscan.com/as/cabs/ascguiie.cab\pskavs.dll
and
C:\program files\Panda Security\TotalScan\pskavs.dll

which Avast said were "worms".

I assume this isn't a problem and I should just shut down Avast before I do this but I figured I should check with you first.

Hi again,

Yes, it's OK, see here:
http://www.bleepingc...php/t74423.html
It's a false positive, shut Avast down and carry on.

Er, ok that's odd. I can't find the file. It didn't come up in the browse list of things to scan on the website and when I went into the folder using Windows Explorer I don't see it either. Pretty much everything in that drivers folder is a .sys file, there's nothing by that name or anything with the tag xml. :(

Anyway, looks like the file's clean. Here's the report:

Hi again,

Please follow the instructions here:

Sorry for the delay, I've been out of town.

Well that trick worked for getting my Ad-Aware back, but I can't say it's made the computer any faster overall. Ad-Aware incidentally didn't find much of interest, just a lot of cookies and privacy-related files that needed deleting.

Any other ideas?

Hi again,

There's a utility that's been produced that can help you optimise Vista:

There are also some good tips here:

Let me know if any of that helps.

Well, I downloaded Tweak VI but I think most of the features are a bit beyond me, and I'm not sure which would be useful. Is there anything you'd recommend tweaking?

Hi,

My apologies, for some reason I didn't receive a topic reply notification, I'll see if I can find a tutorial for you.
