I'm running WINXP on a WD 312GB HD with 512 MB RAM (which I may be upgrading soon too). It takes a VERY long time to boot up. I haven't actually sat down and timed it but it's enough time for me to push the power button, leave my desk, get dressed/washed up, grab some coffee and come back to find that it's just now getting to my desktop. It works wonderfully when I have only a couple things running (like yahoo and my job platform) but when I start opening things like IE, spellcheck, or my email on top of my usual stuff, it starts to bog down, which I think is why I need to upgrade my RAM (correct me if I'm wrong) even though it shows 93% free space.

Anyhow, my most pressing issue is the length of time on startup. It's also doing something that my previous HD did not do: It shows a black screen with a cursor blinking away for a minute or so before it goes to the Welcome screen (reminds me of the scene in Matrix...follow the white rabbit, lol).

Here's my HJT log:

I suspect that most of your problem is actually caused by shortage of memory. The sweetspot for WinXP is 1gig of ram, althought two gigs is even better. Are you using onbord graphics? If you are, then some of the 512 mb is being usesd as graphics memory, making matters even worse.
The loading times will certainly be better, as Windows does not have to read a program from disk, put some in the ram, ans then put the rest into the swapfile. While the scrren is blank during bootup, is the Hard drive light on all the time?

Sorry for the delayed response....for some reason the forum hasn't been accepting my log in info until today.

Anyhow, I installed another 512 mb RAM which seems to have improved the way my PC handles multiple applications simultaneously but the boot up is still slow. The hard drive light IS on during the entire boot up.

My work consists of word processing applications, which I have several programs open to do this, but nothing that should be using much in the way of graphics (no pics etc, just typing). I rarely play games on here and the most in the way of graphics is when I'm doing something in Photobie, which is only once in a blue moon, and that seems to work fine.

Are you using a separate graphics card, or is it onboard? Even though you are using text based applications, they are still graphics as far as the sceen and display drivers are concermed.

Whatever was originally installed on the computer, directly off the PC product description "NVIDIA GeFroce FX5200XT AG 8x graphics card with 128MB DDR video memory"....I suppose this means something to you because it's greek to me. ;-)

Ok. One other thing to check. Is the hard drive SATA, or IDE? If it is IDE, open control panel, system, device manager, and select the IDE/ATATAPI controllers. For each one, right click and select "properties". choose the "advanced setting tab, and make sure that the Transfer mode is set to "DMA if available". PLease post back, and say what the "current Tranfer mode" is set to.

Primary IDE shows Current Transfer Mode on Device 0 as Ultra DMA Mode 5, Device 1 as Not Applicable. Secondary IDE shows Current Transfer Mode on both Device 0 and 1 as Ultra DMA Mode 2. Transfer modes were already set to "DMA if Available" on all. There is also a third: Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller but there's no "advanced" tab.

I cabn only suggets that you streamline the number of startups, and see if that speeds up the boot time. Go to Start> run, and type "msconfig" in the box. then select the selective startup option then the srartup tab, and uncheck the items one at a time, and see what is taking up the most time. Dont disable your Anti virus, or firewall if you intent to use the internet.

I already have just the bare min starting (firewall, antivirus, keybd, graphics card). Once I get to the Welcome screen it doesn't take long...it's just getting to that point takes forever.

BTW - I just installed another 512 RAM so I have a total of 1 gig. My computer runs with less "hiccups" but didn't affect my startup at all.

I have just looked again at your Hijack this log, and saw an entry that I missed before.
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\guard32.dll,avgrsstx.dll
The guard32.dll is ok, but the other one is not.
Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.

* Save it to your desktop.
* Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
* Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\avgrsstx.dll

* Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
* Click the red Moveit! button.
* Close OTMoveIt

I can't find OTMoveIt anywhere. The bleepingcomputer linkshows as cannot be found and other sites link back to that one. I also found several sites that said it was malware. :scratchhead:

I found this link: http://download.blee...r/OTMoveIt2.exe

I downloaded this one and pasted the path as you instructed but there is a check box for "Unregister DLLs and OCXs". Should this be checked?

YEs, it should be checked. What site claimed that it was malware? It may be detected by some scanners as "suspect" but there is nothing nasty in it.

Prevx and spywaredata had it listed as possible malware but I couldn't get much info as to why they had it listed like that. Those two just came up when I googled "otmoveit" to try to find a download site for it.

OK, completed the OTmoveit. What's next?
