'XP antivirus 2008'(or maybe 2009) popped up on my system on 7/10 requesting me to download immediately and my CA antivirus software detected a problem but didn't seem to handle it well. I closed out of the XP antivirus pop up but it persisted. When I ran my antivirus software it didn't detect anything. I knew that there was a problem and I rebooted my system. Then I tried to restore to a previous date and I had no bold option dates to choose from. Also, my desktop background was blue. I then ran SuperAntiSpyware and that found some problems which I deleted. Then I downloaded Avira Premium Suite antivirus and that also found problems which I deleted. Then I ran Google spyware doctor and that too found files of which I removed. I was able to get my desktop background back to normal but I know that there is something wrong with my system as it still sluggish and takes a long time to log on (even though I unchecked all but AV in the start up).
I have read the FAQ and followed the directions.

Please review and advise which needs to be removed:

Hi gotsdgo, and Welcome to SWI

Sorry it has taken so long to get to you, but the board has been very busy lately, and all the Helpers here are volunteers.

I suggest printing out each set of instructions and reading the entire post before proceeding. It will make following them easier. Please follow all the instructions in the order listed.

You appear to be running CA Internet Security Suite, and Avira Premium Security Suite. It is not recommended to run more than one antivirus program or more than one firewall as they wil conflict with each other, and you actually end up with less protection, not more. You need to decide which security suite to keep, and completely remove the other. FYI, Avira is one of the best antivirus programs available. CA's eTust AntiVirus has one of the worst detection rates of any antivirus program tested in several AV tests. Of those two choices, I would uninstall CA Internet Security Suite without a second thought. Check these reviews where CA AntiVirus was near to bottom of the products tested.
http://www.wildersse...ad.php?t=205507
http://blogs.pcworld...ves/004468.html
http://www.pcmag.com...,2135053,00.asp

You are also running Pest Patrol. It's not a program that I would recommend because it has a long history of an excessivbe number of false positives, indicating that something is a problem, when it isn't. I would recommend uninstalling it. If you are after real-time anti-spyware protection, you may want to look at the free version of SUPERAntiSpyware.

I believe the following to be one of the problems with my system being sluggish but not confident to remove without advice:
[lphcr70j0elft] C:\WINDOWS\system32\lphcr70j0elft.exe

That is part of the problem, and should be removed with the following instructions.

Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Private Data).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Download ComboFix© by sUBs from one of these links:
http://download.blee...Bs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospywa...Bs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Save the file to your Desktop.

Familiarize yourself with ComboFix before running it:
http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix
This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

Disconnect from the Internet (pull the connection cable) <-- Important
Close your antivirus program and any anti-spyware programs you may be running.

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
Don't click on the ComboFix window while its running; that could cause it to stall.
When finished, and after reboot, it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post that log in your next reply.

After the system restarts, your antivirus program should be running again.
If it isn't, restart it manually.
Reconnect to the Internet.

Please post a new HijackThis log, the log from MBAM, and in a second reply (due to length) the log from ComboFix (combofix.txt), and note any errors encountered.

Attached please find the new HijackThis log and the MBAM log. Thanks for your help - greatly appreciated.
However I had trouble with ComboFix - I don't have my Windows XP CD and therefore followed the directions to set up without a CD. When I got to the part of the tutorial " Once the Microsoft file has finished downloading, you should drag it on top of the ComboFix icon and let your mouse button go. This is shown in the following image. ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper." This didn't work for me and instead it kept wanting to Run the combofix.exe and I wasn't ready to start it.

Your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log was cut off due to length. There are two choices:
Zip the file and attach it to your next post. In a Reply window, the option to attach a file is just below the box where you type in your reply:

Posted Image

If you can't attach the file, go to http://savefile.com and you can upload the zipped log file there. There is no need to register, just click the "UPLOAD MY FILE" button. After you upload the file, please post the link to the file in your topic. That way, anyone on the board can see the log almost as easily as if it were posted here.

Spyware Doctor's OnGuard protective functionality may interfere with certain HijackThis fixes we need to make. Please follow these instructions to disable it:

To deactivate Spyware Doctor's OnGuard Tools

1. From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
2. Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".

You can reenable it once your system is clean.

Since installation of the Recovery Console failed with that method, try this instead:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216417

1. Click Start, click Run, and then type CD-ROM drive letter:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons in the Open box, where CD-ROM drive letter is the drive letter assigned to your CD-ROM drive.
2. Click OK, follow the instructions on the screen to finish Setup, and then restart your computer.

We need to make sure you have the most recent version of ComboFix.
Delete your current copy of ComboFix.exe.
Download ComboFix© by sUBs from one of these links:
http://download.blee...Bs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospywa...Bs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Save the file to your Desktop.
Disconnect from the Internet (pull the connection cable) <-- Important
Close Avira Premium Security Suite (both the antivirus and the firewall, and close any anti-spyware programs you may be running..

Please post a new Hijackthis log, the log from ComboFix (combofix.txt), and note any errors encountered.

ComboFix Log: attached text file
MBAM Log: attached WinRAR Zip file

The only issue that I had is that I didn't know how to close/deactivate Avira AV program and it began scanning I think after ComboFix was finished(I was out of the room).
Also, when I start up my laptop I now have the option to select Windows home edition XP or Windows Recovery Console - will it remain like this? When I select Windows Recovery Console it asks for a prompt and I don't know what to enter so I can't go any further.

Now you need to run HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only." Place a check next to the following entries (if they are still there):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Now close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" to have HijackThis fix the entries you checked.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, check the "agree" box.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Please post a new HijackThis log.
Does your problem continue?

Everything seems to be running fine - no problems. I presume being prompted for Windows Recovery Console upon restart is normal?

Again, thanks a million for all your help.

Excellent. :D

I presume being prompted for Windows Recovery Console upon restart is normal?

Yes, but you can decrease the default time that it waits for a selection before it automatically starts Windows. Press the Windows key (has the Windows logo on it) and hold it down, and then press the Pause/Break key, and System properties will open. Click the Advanced tab, then at the bottom of that window, click the Settings button in the "Startup and Recovery" box. In the box for "Time to display list of operating systems", you can adjust the amount of time that menu is displayed. I have mine set to 5 seconds, so it's only a slight delay.

Create a Restore Point
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a Restore Point and then Next.
  • In the box for "Restore point description", enter a descriptive name and press Create
  • When the "Restore Point Created" window appears, click Close
Run Disk Cleanup
  • Go to Start > Run and type the below line:
    cleanmgr
  • Click OK
    • If you have more than one drive, select the drive Windows is installed on
    • Click OK
  • When Disk Cleanup opens, select the More Options tab
  • In the System Restore section (bottom of window), click Cleanup
    • In the confirmation window that opens, click Yes
  • Now click on the Disk Cleanup tab and select the following items:
    • Downloaded Program Files
    • Temporary Internet Files
    • Recycle Bin
    • Temporary Files
  • Click OK
  • in the confirmation window, select Yes (Disk Cleanup will close).
There are several free utilities you can use to help keep malware off your system:

A HOSTS file will prevent Internet Explorer from communicating with sites known to be associated with adware or spyware. A good regularly updated HOST file is MVPS HOSTS File, available at http://www.mvps.org/...p2002/hosts.htm.

IE/SPYAD adds sites associated with ads and spyware to your Internet Restricted Zone and you can download that at http://www.spywarewa...uc/resource.htm.

A free non-resident utility to prevent the installation of ActiveX-based malware is JavaCool's SpywareBlaster. For real-time protection, there is SpywareGuard. Both are available at http://www.javacools...m/products.html.

I recommend reading Tony Klein's article So How did I get Infected in the First Place? at http://www.spywarein...showtopic=60955

Followed all your instructions and then installed JavaCool's SpywareBlaster. I started using Mozilla Firefox a few weeks ago so I didn't think that I needed the other two.
My system seems to be better than ever thanks to you. I think that what you guys do is just fantastic so I donated!!

THANK YOU :D

Twice in the last few weeks, when I've turned on my laptop, I'm getting a Fatal Error message and it prompts me to shut down. When I start up again everthing works fine. I'm worried that something serious is about to go wrong. I've posted Mbam and HijackThis logs.
Thanks,

I see no malware in your log.

Go to Start > Run, and type eventvwr and hit Enter.

You should see errors associated under either Application or System. Click on each item that has an "X" in a red circle. Does that show what failed?

There was nothing attached. If you have trouble uploading an attachment, you can upload it to http://savefile.com. There is no need to register, just click the "UPLOAD MY FILE" button. After you upload the file, please post the link to the file in your topic.

Were there any errors under System with a red X? If the only error was under Application, and it was that Google error, I would ignore it for now, or if it continues to happen, uninstall your Google software and reinstall it to see if that fixes the problem.

Yes, there were several errors with a red X under System. http://savefile.com isn't working so I'll try uploading the file again - this time I've compressed it.

When you save the Event Viewer log file, it should have a file extension of .evt. Please save it using the default settings and not as a .docx file and attach the updated file.

Since when you click on the events, the file is ati related (ati2mtag). I would go to http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html, find the correct driver for your video card, and update it. After rebooting, see if you still have the same problem. I found a lot of people having the same problem, but it may have been fixed in a driver update.

Hello Joker,
The 'fatal error' hasn't happened for some time now - so I must have located the correct driver on the AMD website (wasn't quite sure what I was doing).
Thanks again for all your help.
