Hi all! Haven't been here for a while (I supposed that's a good thing!) but I seem to be having problems now.

Every once in a while my PC will lock up and I'll have to try and close all open programs with CTRL ALT DEL. Sometimes shutting down and restarting helps but not always. My internet also seems to slow down and sometimes IE shows that "no connection" page even though I can see on my modem that I am connected. Also (and this may be completely unrelated) it takes forever to get my computer up and running. I've gone through all different things on a previous post here to try to fix this but to no avail.

Anyhow, here's my log, I love it if someone could take a look at it for me. Thanks!

Hi cptcook76, and welcome to SWI.

Let's run a scan to prove or disprove the presence of malware.

Please use the Internet Explorer browser, and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
  • Once the files are downloaded click on Next
  • Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.

To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

After that, please register (it's free, don't worry) with PCPitStop and run the full tests here. When the tests are complete, a results page will pop up. Click "Share these results with TechExpress" on the right-hand side. Then copy the URL provided and post it here for me.

Attached File  kscan9208.txt   997bytes   31 downloadsHere's my Kapersky scan. Took several hours to complete.

Did the PCPitstop but there was no "share" button anywhere.

FYI - I've done the PCPitstop before (a few months ago) and it stated I needed to update display adapters, modem, mouse, keyboard, etc. drivers but there were no drivers available to update. HP and MS both said my drivers were up to date. I also couldn't find any updated drivers from any other source.

Hi,

For PCPitstop, just copy and paste the URL from the Results screen.

Also, please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from here, and save it to your Desktop.

Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:

Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the whole lot, check Select All.
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

Hi,

PCPitStop noted several things that you can do to improve the shape your computer is in.

Pay particular attention to these items:

Defragment files (Drive C)
Defragmenting is a must. It's one of the large reasons for system slowdowns. I use Diskeeper Lite to defragment. It is the trial version of Diskeeper, and you can use it forever. I recommend installing it and defragmenting as soon as possible

Reduce System Restore space (Drive C):
Right click My Computer and click Properties. Select the System Restore tab, and move the slider to 3%. You're pretty much wasting disk space otherwise.

Also take the time to take a look at the other tips PCPitStop reported. I've just highlighted some of the more important ones.

After that, restart your computer a couple of times and let me know if performance is any better. If not, post a fresh HijackThis log, and we'll remove some startup entries to free up resources.

I just did a clean system and defrag last night before running the PCPitstop. Is the application WinXP gives for this not sufficient?

Also I cannot decrease my system restore capacity due to a platform I use for work, and I above stated that there are no updates available for the drivers PCPitstop indicates (every source I've come across states I have the most up-to-date drivers).

I've disabled the saved passwords for Firefox.

In all honesty, it isn't sufficient. Otherwise, PCPitStop wouldn't have reported that your drive was still fragmented.

Go ahead and run the defrag I mentioned above, let me know how performance is, then post a fresh HijackThis log.

So far, so good as far as performance goes but it at last count it took 5 min 18 sec for my computer to go from hitting the power button to being fully booted, with the most time being spent at a blank, black DOS-looking screen with a blinking cursor and then the black MS Windows screen.

Hi,

Please open HijackThis, and select Do a system scan only.

Optionally place a checkmark next to the following entries (if present):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMan] SOUNDMAN.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IncrediMail] C:\Program Files\IncrediMail\bin\IncMail.exe /c

Then, close all other open windows, leaving only HijackThis open, and select Fix checked.

Restart your computer a couple of times, and let me know if performance improves at all.

I deleted those items but I noticed upon each restart (3x) that my firewall kept asking to allow a bunch of different programs initiated by it's "parent program" (RUNDLL32.EXE). I allowed them this time (I have no idea what they were but the firewall alert stated it was previously allowed) but should I not allow it next time I restart? Also startup time didn't really change, only sped up by about 30 seconds with 2-1/2 minutes spent at the WinXP screen.

Here's the new log:

Hi,

I deleted those items but I noticed upon each restart (3x) that my firewall kept asking to allow a bunch of different programs initiated by it's "parent program" (RUNDLL32.EXE). I allowed them this time (I have no idea what they were but the firewall alert stated it was previously allowed) but should I not allow it next time I restart? Also startup time didn't really change, only sped up by about 30 seconds with 2-1/2 minutes spent at the WinXP screen.

Can't really tell you if you should allow them without more information about each program specifically...

Aside from that, I see a couple of orphans in your log...

Please open HijackThis, and select Do a system scan only.

Place a checkmark next to the following entries (if present):

O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar2.dll (file missing)
O18 - Protocol: qbwc - {FC598A64-626C-4447-85B8-53150405FD57} - mscoree.dll (file missing)

Then, close all other open windows, leaving only HijackThis open, and select Fix checked.

Aside from that, there's not much more I can do for your performance... The great people at TechSupportForum may be better suited to evaluate your hardware and offer suggestions.

Thanks for all your help! I'll see what else the tech guys may be able to do for me. Perhaps I'll just have to resign myself that this is as fast as the new hard drive will boot up. :-(
