I have a difficult time updating my Avast! anti-virus definitions. When I try to do it manually it keeps mentioning, "Error: can not connect to server."

I use Windows XP.

I was able to update the Avast anti-virus definitions. The Proxy settings were set at Auto detect (use Internet Explorer settings). I changed it to direct connection (no proxy) and it was able to update successfully.

When Avast tries to connect to its home to get the update, it may be blocked by your firewall, your MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) 'Website Blocking', or some other protection program. If you have MBAM, look in its log. If necessary add to Ignore List..

Sorry for the late response. Haven't been here in a while. I was able to get Avast up and working some time ago. It works fine now.

Thanks Johnny Almighty, I’ve gone through the identical scenario and then discovered yr solution. Worked beautifully, what a relief. Weeks of applying and testing other suggestions, creating more problems, came to nothing.
