Hello, I have a notebook and run Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

I watched a film via HDMI cable from my notebook to my TV the other night, and when I unplugged the resolution on my notebook had changed from 1280x700 to 1280x600. Now my notebook seems to think this is the maximum resolution in the settings/options and won't allow me to go back to my original/larger resolution.

Any ideas are very appreciated.

Hello Cookie. Welcome to SWI.

Does your monitor have on screen controls? You should be able to restore default setting that way.

And try this:
Do Start > Run, and enter 'dxdiag.exe'. Run all the tests. Click 'Save All Information' and copy the contents of the log into your reply.

I take it that when you go to Control Panel as described by Acer at http://acer.custhelp...1478/kw/display the maximum resolution appears as 1280x600.

Please do this.
Start > Run, and enter 'cmd'. Click OK to bring up a command window.
In the window enter 'cd c:\'

Copy this line:
[box]REG EXPORT "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\UnitedVideo\CONTROL\VIDEO" video.reg[/box]
Right-click in the command window and select 'Paste', then hit Enter.
You should see: "The operation completed successfully."
Close the command window.

Please then open c:\video.reg in Notepad and paste the contents in your reply.

I could not get the operation to complete sucessfully, here it the Command Prompt window showing my attempts. Am I doing something wrong?

It looks as though you do not have permission to write to C:\.
We need an elevated command window.
Make sure you are logged on as Administrator.
Navigate with Explorer to C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe
Right-click cmd.exe and select 'Run as administrator'.
Then try it again in the window that opens.

Good.

Copy this exact text to a new file in Notepad (the blank line is needed):
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\UnitedVideo\CONTROL\VIDEO\{F3F9AF5A-3BE9-4DFA-9149-5CAA08CAB1D1}\0000]
"DefaultSettings.XResolution"=dword:00000556
"DefaultSettings.YResolution"=dword:00000300
Save As 'ResolutionFix.reg'. Be sure to set 'Save as type' to 'All types (*.*)'; otherwise Notepad will give it .txt extension instead of .reg.

Now double-click on ResolutionFix.reg to run it.
When asked if you want to merge, indicate yes.

That should fix it. You may need to reboot. Try configuring display and let me know if all is well.

I merged ResolutionFix.reg and then rebooted, but the maximum is still being shown as 1260x600 :aggressive:

Is there anything else you/we can do? It's such a pain.

Found it. Didn't think to look in Current Config.

In the elevated command window:
cd c:\
REG EXPORT "HKCC\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\VIDEO" video2.reg
As before, open video2.reg and paste the contents in your reply.

Thank you, it's very appreciated.

I don't know if this info is any help but when you attach the laptop to the TV the resolution on the TV is much bigger then that on the laptop, and it changes automatically.

When I unplugged it automatically changed to the lower resolution of the laptop, unfortunately for me it changed to a lower one.

EDIT: Carrying out tasks now.

Before we proceed - are you sure about 1280 x 700?
Acer gives the resolution here: http://us.acer.com/a...el/LU.SB002.197 as 1366 x 768 and that is what I am trying to set it to.

I'm stumped at least for the moment. Do you have a System Restore point from before the resolution changed? Do Start > System Restore. Click 'Next' and see what you have. If there is a suitable one, restoring might be your best bet.

Let's get more info..
  • Please download and install the free program Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Follow the directions here to run a complete system scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and please post the report from the scan! We will want to see it.
  • Next:

    DDS

    Posted Image

Please download DDS and save it to your Desktop from here or here
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Please save both reports to your Desktop.
Please post the contents of the DDS.txt log. We need it to diagnose and fix malware problems - we may ask for Attach.txt later.

  • Security Check
  • Finally, please download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

I have a suggestion from Indrid_Cold:
"Just a hunch. Laptop seems convinced that it is still connected to an external display. Might want to have the OP [you] try the FN key along with F5 key to toggle between modes. If not the F5 key OP should check OM [Owner's Manual] for correct F key to toggle."

Definitely worth a try. Owner's Manual is here: http://support.acer....ng_OLM_0114.pdf
In the 'Hotkeys' section it says:
<Fn> + <F5> Display toggle Switches display output between the
                                   display screen, external monitor (if
                                   connected) and both.

All of my logs for the above checks can be found at

http://www.spywarein...tebook-checkup/

They were also under-taken with my lower resolution.

And unfortunately, the FN + F5 did not do anything.

Try this: As Indrid_Cold says, your PC seems to think it is still connected to an external display. Do whatever you did before to connect to TV. Then do Control Panel > Display, Change display settings. Click Detect. You should see two monitors labeled 1 and 2.

In the dropdown menu for 'Multiple displays' select 'Show desktop only on 1' if 1 is the laptop screen, or 'Show desktop only on 2' if 2 is the laptop screen. Set the correct resolution for it and click OK. Let me know if it will not set to 1366 x 768.

Disconnect the TV.

Open the Control Panel > Display, 'Change display settings' again, click 'Detect'. Now there should be just one monitor pictured and it should be your laptop. Again, check the setting.

I didn't realize you had two threads open for the same PC. I have closed the other one.
The logs were taken some time ago.
If resolution is still not correct, please follow my directions above and post the new logs. Be sure you download latest copies of those programs.

Sorry for the delay, I have been on holiday.

I tried what you said but upon disconnecting, my resolution remained the same

The logs from the previous topic were all 'captured' with my current, lower resolution, however I will post new logs if you want me too.

Thank you for your help.

Please try this. Directions are for my Windows 7.

Right click the desktop, select "Screen Resolution" and click "Advanced settings". The Display and adapter properties should appear.
In "Monitor" tab, uncheck "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" and click Apply.
Then go to "Adapter" tab and click on "List All Modes..." button. In there select the desired resolution, color depth and frequency, click OK and Apply to test. Ok again if you're satisfied.
