Hard to read, but good enough.

Reviewing this whole thread, I see that I never had you attempt hard disk repair.

Open Explorer, right-click on the C: drive and select Properties.
In the Tools tab, click 'Check now'.
Check both the boxes, then click Start. See pic below.
The file check is reasonably fast but the sector scan will need to reboot and may take several hours - you won't be able to use the PC until it finishes. It will attempt to map out the failing sectors so they never get used.

Ok the scan completed, not sure if it fixed anything.

Seems it didn't take much time. You did check both boxes? And it did reboot before scanning sectors?

Main thing though is are you still getting the S.M.A.R.T. error messages? If you get one, please write down the exact words and let me know.

I don't think there is anything more I can do.

I think you already tried Restoring Your Dell Computer to Original Factory Installation?

Actually I didn't try restoring yet. Right now I'm trying to see if there's anything Dell can do, and if not, then I'm going to restore it to factory settings.

I contacted DELL and they told me there was absolutely nothing they could do since my warranty expired a couple months ago. However I asked for a Windows 7 disc and they sent me a Windows 7 Reinstallation DVD along with a "Dell Drivers and Utilities" disc, a "Roxio Easy CD & DVD Burning" disc, and a "Dell Resource Media Webcam Central" disc.

Not exactly sure what I should do from here.

Thanks!

See if you can follow the step by step directions here: http://support.dell....8&isLegacy=true

Read through all the steps before you start. Print their page or have it available on another PC.

Ok, I'll try and do that this week, sorry I have been really busy!

oh and I'm now getting a message that says my battery is dying and I should replace it..the whole computer just seems to be falling apart lol.

and just to be clear, once I install the new hard drive and follow the directions you linked me to, I will no longer be able to access anything on the old hard drive even if I reinstall it, correct?

The directions were for reinstalling the original Windows on your old drive. They will only work on the new drive if you are able to "restore' it from the image you made, or if you install Windows on it.

Ultimately you will boot from your new drive. The old drive can be installed as an external drive using an enclosure: http://www.newegg.co...nal-Enclosures.

But really I think it's time for a new PC.

when you said, "They will only work on the new drive if you are able to "restore' it from the image you made, or if you install Windows on it." by it you mean the new hard drive?

if so will this work?
save all my files and pics etc. on a usb, remove the old hard drive and throw it out, and install windows 7 and the other programs using the disks DELL sent me on the new hard drive. (I know I will lose programs on my computer this way but I think if it works it would be worth it)

I always have my laptop plugged in so will it hurt if I don't replace the battery since I don't ever use it? Or could this cause damage to my system somehow?

If I absolutely need to buy a new laptop I will but financially it's going to be hard.

Thanks!

The battery keeps some data storage working and keeps the clock working when the PC is turned off. It is easy to replace but can be costly if you are speaking of the big laptop battery. http://www.dell.com/...=en&cs=19#faq33

Yes, but don't just throw the old drive in the garbage. Data should be removed and the drive recycled. Your city may provide this service. If not you can use something like http://www.harddriverecycle.com/# or http://www.freeharddriverecycling.com/

ok thanks.

I took out the old hard drive and put in the new one, I started to install windows 7 on the new hard drive. I chose "Custom" over "Upgrade" installation (whatever that means). Now it shows the new hard drive but there is a message that says "windows cannot be installed to this disk. the disk may fail soon." no clue why it says that. not sure what I should do.

If it was the new drive that said that then you should immediately get in touch with Dell support.

Ok, that's what I'm doing but they are of no help at all. especially since I didn't buy the new hard drive from them.

Then you need to contact the source of the drive, tell them the problem, and if they can't succeed with the installation ask for a replacement drive.

Great news! I restored the laptop to factory settings. I ran the Dell Support Center scan and it found nothing wrong with my hard drive.
Hopefully it's totally fixed but I have a lot of Windows updates etc. to install so hopefully nothing goes wrong.

Well it's been a couple days and still no problems popped up with the hard drive. I can't believe it's actually fixed (at least for the time being) thank you so much for your time and help. I hope you won't see me back here anytime soon.

I guess you can close the thread again!
