I have a Windows computer using Vista. I sometimes surf several sites both at home and at the office and recently my office computer was corrupted with a trojan. Once I purchased a new computer and installed Norton Internet Security two of these websites were noted to have exploits or other problems, yet I do not receive these same warnings on my computer at home, where I use Symantec Endpoint. I scan with Malware Bytes and Norton, but have uncovered no problem. However, the same could be said of my office computer before it was corrupted. Attached are my logs from Hijackthis, Malware bytes, dds, and security check. One disclaimer, when running Hijackthis the program indicated that it woulc not access host files, but I posted the results as is. I would appreciate a quick look to see if there is a problem on my home machine or if there are any recommendations. Thank you very much for your time and thoughts.

Hello powerhouse. Don't worry about HijackThis - it doesn't understand Vista.

Please scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image
      icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

After that:
Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Search.
  • A logfile will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with another reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[R1].txt as well.

Good. ESET found only adware. Adware is a nuisance but not a serious infection. AdwCleaner will get rid of the rest of it.

Please let AdwCleaner remove everything it finds.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Please use the dark 'Add Reply' button when replying - I don't need to see my posts. :)

I believe your PC is now clean.

Please do these important security updates:
Make sure IE 9 is patched (use Windows Update).
Get the latest version of Firefox.
Updating Java:
  • Go here and download the latest version of Java:
  • Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
They should have this icon next to any that are there: Posted Image
Select any found and choose Uninstall.
  • Then install the version you downloaded earlier.
Optional:
Enable Vista firewall.
Disable Norton and install one of these excellent free Antivirus. Avast is my favorite.

Free version of Avast
Microsoft Security Essentials.

Cleanup:
Run AdwCleaner and click 'Uninstall'
Delete DDS and Security Check from your Desktop.
