Problem description
Windows XP pc has a strange, horizontal banded graphic display and very slow update after MBAM runs a scheduled scan.

When the PC is first booted, it behaves properly. After Norton Security and MBAM have done their daily scans, the PC has slow graphic update. Although the mouse cursor moves smoothly across the desktop, graphic display within most windows is extremely slow and it appears that the PC response is very sluggish.
Example 1: while typing in notepad, the vertical bar that represents the current insert position will remain displayed at the end of one line after I press Enter to move to the next line.
Ex. 2: When closing a window or other graphic display, random horizontal stripes of the closed window remain displayed for 5-10 seconds. A quick demo of this is to press the start button twice. The first press displays the start menu normally. The second press closes the start menu but the display continues to show random stripes.

I considered a possible MBAM conflict.

10/1/12
I first noticed this problem on the morning of 10/1/12, after the very first time that MBAM ran a scheduled scan.
I found advice on the Norton and MBAM sites that suggested that there could be a conflict between the 2 apps. I installed in Norton the MBAM scan exclusions following those suggested on the MBAM site:
http://forums.malwar...showtopic=10138
The actions I took were as follows:
I booted to Windows. Go to desktop. Was able to open Malwarebytes and turn off protection.
In Norton Security, I found the Scan Exclusions dialog at:
Settings > Antivirus > Scans and Risks - scroll down to see “Exclusions / Low Risks”
-Click to configure “Items to Exclude from Auto-protect, Sonar and Download Intelligence detection”
window “Real Time Exclusions” opens.
-Click to configure “Items to Exclude from Scans” - window “Scan Exclusions” opens.
I added 6 files that relate to MBAM
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamscheduler.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\mbam.sys

The above list is different from what I saw on the MBAM forum, where that post listed:
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\mbam.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

(Note that in my case, I found mbampt.exe and did not find mbamswissarmy.sys) (nevertheless, the XP application event log shows that MBAMswissarmy service generates events).

I completed my action:
In Malwarebytes, turn on both protections (file system and malicious web browsing).

This was done on 10/1/12 around 915pm.
The PC was shutdown and MBAM did not do the scan that had been scheduled for 514am on 10/2/12.
10/2/12
On 10/2/12, the PC was booted at about 10AM. I worked with it for a an hour in the morning and in the afternoon with no problems.
I left the PC on overnight
10/3/12
MBAM did its scheduled scan on 10/3/12
I did not do any work with the pc on 10/3/12 but checked its status at 7pm.
The Norton Performance window was still open from yesterday.
I found that an MBAM scan had completed.
I found that the pc was very sluggish, with horizontal banded graphic display and very slow update.
I rebooted the pc and found it was behaving well.
I disabled mbam protection (real time protection) at 723pm.
leave pc on overnight
10/4/12
MBAM did a scan at 514am
at 10am I checked the pc status and saw the problem again: horizontal banded graphic display and very slow update.

I did HJT and DDS scans.
After reboot, system behaving ok.
In MBAM, change scheduler setting from daily to monthly, next scheduled scan is 11/1/12 514am.
Do SecurityCheck scan.

  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image
      icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.

Thanks for your advice. I ran the ESET Online Scanner at 7pm on 10/5/12. It found no threats so there is no report to post. However, I copy the summary here:
scanned files 37448
infected: 0
cleaned: 0
scan time: 25:43
status: finished.

So far, with MBAM disabled, the PC has been running OK.

I think it is a conflict between MBAM and Norton. Don't schedule them to run at the same time. It is generally a bad idea to have more than one real time antispyware. If you have MBAM Protection enabled, then disable any Norton real time functions. If necessary configure MBAM to ignore Norton.

I would have more faith in MBAM than in Norton if you have to make a choice. We don't recommend Norton, as there are first-rate free AV available. Microsoft Security Essentials or free version of Avast.

If you still have problem, try reinstalling MBAM.

After uninstalling MBAM, the system behaved well for a while, but this morning, after being on for a day, the problem recurred.
The system was so slow I could not start DDS. I had to shutdown by holding down the power button.
I have an Acronis disk image from 9/30/12 and I'm thinking of restoring it.
Before doing that, is there any further testing you recommend to document the current configuration?

Another scan:
Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Search.
  • A logfile will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[R1].txt as well.

After that:
Your disk is 9% fragmented, so I suggest defragmenting; sometimes that will improve speed. A good free tool is Defraggler.

Restoring from image: Are you sure the slowness was not happening on 9/30? If all was good at that time, then restoring would be a good option.

You were occasionally getting error messages like this:

10/2/2012 10:09:13 AM, error: Dhcp [1002] - The IP address lease 192.168.2.5 for the Network Card with network address 5C260A241128 has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.1.1 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).

Those suggest that the problem may be with your ISP. It will happen if their DNS is overloaded. Sometimes ISPs oversell their service without adequately increasing their hardware capability. The failures will be intermittent and depend on how many other clients near you are active.

A possible solution which has worked well for me: Use Google's DNS
Write down the current DNS settings before experimentally making the change.

In response to your comment about IP address lease denial:

We use a local Router to assign IP addresses on our LAN and to provide network address translation so our PC's are protected somewhat.
It is possible that the lease is denied when I take the laptop from one LAN (work) to another LAN (home). It may happen that the address assigned at one location conflicts with an existing address at the other. Perhaps that results in the error message.

the registry key found by AdwCleaner, referring to SearchScopes and ending in E3A, is associated with Bing.
There are analogous keys for Google web and Google desktop search.

Please try changing your PC's internet DNS as I suggested here.

The DNS on the web is different from the DNS on your LAN which is handled by your router.

You can reinstall Bing if you actually want it (usually installed via an option box that was overlooked).

I’m trying both of your suggestions. I defrag’d the C-drive. I changed my DNS settings to use the public google server. It will take some time (a day or so) to see whether this has resolved the problem, because the PC runs well after a reboot.
In the meantime, I’m not sure how the DNS issue you mention would cause my problem. Other pc’s on the local network are connected thru the same router to the same ISP (sbcglobal) and are not experiencing the performance problem. In addition, I’m not browsing the web when the problem occurs. Can you help me understand how a DNS problem would relate to my sluggish pc problem?
BTW, I don’t use Bing.

I’m not sure how the DNS issue you mention would cause my problem. Other pc’s on the local network are connected thru the same router to the same ISP (sbcglobal) and are not experiencing the performance problem.

That possible cause is ruled out, then.

Reviewing your description of the problem:

the PC has slow graphic update.

We've ruled out pretty much everything except a problem with your graphics board or graphics software.
Do you remember when you started experiencing these things? Did it start suddenly or just gradually get worse?

Please do Start > Run and enter 'dxdiag.exe'. Run all the tests. Then click 'Save All Information'. Save as DxDiag.txt and post its contents.

You asked:
Do you remember when you started experiencing these things? Did it start suddenly or just gradually get worse?

===
I reviewed my notes. The problem started suddenly on 10/1/12, after the very first time that MBAM ran a scheduled scan.
(See my very first post on this topic for additional details.)

There are other manifestations of the display problem.
On 10/10/12 I was working in Word 2000 when I saw a black background that made a portion of text unreadable.
This problem went away when I changed the Word display mode from "Web Layout" to "Normal".
"Print layout" was also ok.

>>>>Display setting change on 10/10/12<<<<
At this time, I changed the Display properties at:
Display properties - settings - advanced -troubleshoot
the original settings were:
Hardware acceleration is Full
Enable Write combining is checked

I changed to:
Hardware accel = None
disable write combining
and rebooted to apply the new settings.

On 10/12/12 I observed that the system seems to be well behaved. The only concern is slow graphic refresh rate. I worked with Word, Powerpoint and GotoMeeting with video display for a total of a couple hours each day on 10/11 and on 10/12.
>>>Display setting change<<<<
At the end of day on 10/12, I changed the display setting of Hardware acceleration, restoring it to "Full".
Although I did not have to reboot, I did so. I saw that Word displayed faster.
I left the system on over the weekend.
on 10/15/12 the status was ok. but I worked with it only for 10 minutes that day.
On 10/16 at noon, there was a problem:
start menu would not open
a few min. later I found it had opened.
graphics painting in Adobe reader is slow - I can see the text area being painted.
Later I figured out that this was due to disabling write combining.
On 10/17/12 status was ok - able to open and close Start menu without getting the banded display.
After working for a couple hours I decided the graphic painting is annoyingly slow.
I enabled write combining at 427pm
Reboot was required.
I worked with the system for another hour with no problems. I left it on overnight.
10/18/12 - this morning I ran the DxDiag and have been working with the system for 1.5 hours with no problems.

After reading about write combining and frame buffers at:
http://en.wikipedia....Write-combining and
http://en.wikipedia....iki/Framebuffer,
I seems to me that the horizontal banded display is a failure that relates to Write combining within the frame buffer.

The connection with MBAM is obscure unless possibly it found a corrupt component and removed it. Good work looking into Write combining.

Your DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) has an available update at http://www.microsoft...aylang=en&id=35

You might want to do the update, which will also replace any missing or damaged components. Make a System Restore Point first.

Thanks.
I reviewed the MBAM logs. It never detected any bad objects, so it never removed anything.
I'll look into the DirectX update.
I'll probably post some news in a few days.

Still with me, don01?

Since my last post, I've installed some Dell updates and made other software changes. For the most part, the pc is now working ok. I will post a summary of these activities when I get time, as it may be helpful to others who use this forum.
