(Please move this to the correct forum if it belongs elsewhere. ~Thanks! )

I have been sent an invitation to open a GMail account. I would like to open it, as long as it does not cause problems on our computer. I know that GMail scans your e-mail in order to do target advertising.

Does having GMail leave the computer open to spyware and other nasties?

Thanks!

Short answer, NO.

It's always recommended to use SpywareBlaster, and the umminize function from Spybot to protect yourself aganst the spyware and other nasties.

But Gmail won't open you comp for them...

Only thing you should be aware of is that when you choose to receive the SpywareInfo newsletter, gmail will sometimes move it to the "Spam" Section.

Accept it. Not very many people get the chance to have a Gmail account, so snap up the opertunity while you can.

You can get this with many of the web based email services.

My yahoo account is constantly labeling anything from the US Geological Survey as spam. What is worse, it won’t let me set it to ‘not spam’.

I know that GMail scans your e-mail in order to do target advertising

I too have been offered a Gmail account, but if it is true that they scan your email then I think I would go with an email service that is a little more private. I want an email service that scans my mail as much as I want a wiretap on my phone.

What’s next, little white minivans cruising the neighborhood with loudspeakers and big bright electronic billboards on their sides, blasting out advertisements for viagra?

Thank you so much for your opinions everyone. I think that I WILL open the account. I know that there is that privacy issue "thing," but I am willing to take the risk.

What I DID'T want to risk was our computer being bogged down with more spyware, etc.

Thanks again! :)

:p If I (the incarnation of paranoia) have accepted a GMail invitation, why shouldn't you? Let's face it, 1 GB of storage space isn't something to pass by too easily... And I don't see a reason why GMail in particular would leave your PC open to spyware. :)

The truth is that pretty much any (free) web based e-mail provider will scan your e-mail in order to provide supposedly relevant ads. This is nothing new - both Yahoo and Hotmail are already doing this more or less. The scanning is being done automatically with bots, which means there's little chance any human eye will actually have physical access to your messages.

So run and grab the invitation while you still have the chance!

Best,
R.

I use Gmail and I do like it, no spyware or adware is left by it as far as I have experienced and as far as I know.

But Gmail isn't using it against you. No human is reading it, and the ads are relevant to your content.

The truck passing by your house is only advertising Viagra because you're the one interested in it.. ;]

Yes, you're going to say, then what about those people that spam you with unwanted ads? Well, in the many years I've had my email account, I've never received those emails. I assume it's only if you've been to 'naughty' websites.

I have and have been using gmail for the past couple of months now, it is safe.
It doesn't matter which email provider you use, they will scan it for advertising and or search purposes.

I doubt that I would use Gmail but if I did, I would probably encrypt my emails using PGP. Of course that means the person receiving can only read it if they also have PGP.

Call me paranoid, but I'd be happy if everyone used PGP for their email correspondence. The free version can be downloaded here:

For the links.

Send an invite to yourself (not using your gmail account, that doesn't work, I made a hotmailaccount for this). You'll get a link from every invite. Copy/paste it here... and done.

How do I copy and paste the link??

How To Copy and Paste:

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the link, click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted link, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'.
Now open this forum and add an reply. Click the "http://" button, paste the link in the popupscreen by rightclicking on the inputarea of that screen and select the option 'paste'. Another window will appear, you do the same thing: rightclick and paste.
Now the link should work.

I have seen many advocates against gmail based on what they call privacy threats. In my personal view it is no more or less secure than other email systems eg hotmail or yahoo.

Does anyone think gmail represents more of a threat to privacy than say other web based services ?

Hey gagman,

That is a perfect explanation of how to copy and paste. I guess I should have been more specific. When I tried to copy the link I must have had the cursor in the wrong place or something, 'cause I just kept opening the link. :p

Anyway...got it this time, so here are six for those who are interested..

This one's gone

And here's another link to the Gmail site that really explains what it's all about and their privacy policy etc., etc.

I decided to use my invite after I read the info.

Enjoy :D

He had to apolgize to google live on TV the next day.

Gmail search robots peruse either what you type, or what you receive(or both ? ) and put up ads that they think match on your mail page.
I don't think it's an invasion of privacy, as I'm sure it's all done by machine(so to speak ), but it can be disconcerting, if you don't read the welcome /privacy info., and don't know to expect it.

I sent an email to a friend, and she responded , on how to best clean jewelry. I had 4 or 5 sites listed for jewelry cleaning, or selling. Went away the next day though.

I really don't care for GMail. The address book- I cannot send an email to more than one person at a time.
Yes, they have a large storage amount, but I would never use it all in a million years !
No virus scanning of attachments, either, but it is free, so I didn't expect one.

I think the big popularity of it is the storage space, and the fact you can still choose a username that is decent.

It's next to impossible to get a name you want on other web based emails now.

I was able to actually use my real name for business purposes and for friends, which I was never able to get with Yahoo.

I prefer Yahoo paid version- but my user name is ridiculously long, with numbers.

I'm hanging onto the 2 email accounts I have with them, in hopes they will improve it in the future.

If anyone would like to try it, I have a couple invites , that I'd be glad to give !
