My laptop lags and the booting takes a long time.Can someone please help me with this issue?

That said, MSCONFIG is NOT a solution to fix problems. It's troubleshooting tool. if something needs to be removed, it's best to uninstall or turn off in the application settings. A system should NEVER be run in "Selective Startup" mode for day-to-day use.

Looking over your log, the most obvious standout is all the Norton/Symantec services running. While I won't say that Symantec products are bad, I do believe that on systems with low resources (slower processor, less RAM) that the firewall, network management and protection services are not really recommended. Since this seems to be an issue here, you might consider uninstalling the Norton applications except for the Antivirus application.

Also, you can go through the Control Panel or application options to shut off the autorun services for WinAmp, Quicktime, MSN Messenger (and Windows Messenger - very similar applications, and you have them both running) and Spybot's TeaTimer service. If you need help finding these settings, please reply here and let me know; I will be tracking this topic.

Also, if you could, please provide some additional information about your system. on Windows XP, right-click on My Computer (either on the desktop or off the XP Start menu) and select Properties. At the bottom of the General tab, you will find a header that says "Computer:" with info following that with the Process type, speed and RAM size. Please include that info in your next post, along with an updated HijackThis Log.

To turn off the Quicktime tray icon, go to Start->Settings->Control Panel, and double-click on "Quicktime". Select "Browser Plug-in" from the droplist, and then uncheck "QuickTime system tray icon". This is not required to be able to use Quicktime, and just takes extra system resources while running in the background.

With both MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger, there is an option for "Run on Windows Startup" in the Tools->Options menu of each of these programs. Unless you absolutely have to have the IM application running when you turn on the computer, there is no reason for BOTH of these applications to be running. I can't think of any reason they are both needed together, either.

It's up to you if you want to take my advice regarding the Norton Internet Security products. You are running Service Pack 2, so you have the Windows Firewall installed, so the Symantec (Norton) firewall is simply extra resources being consumed on your system, however.

You may also try defragmenting your hard drive. Open My Computer, and right-click the C: drive. Select the "Tools" tab, and click "Defragment Now". Click "Analyze", and check the report. If it says you should defragment your drive, close the report and click "defragment". The process can take quite a while to run.

Can my system get hack or be vulnerable to threats after removing these security products?

Thanks for the invite, ra, but I'll decline for now. I deal with these problems everyday on my own, and am not sure if I would fit in since I have developed my own techniques for dealing with malware on my clients' computers. So I just try to help out with general Windows questions here.

You are entirely correct that MSCONFIG is a t'shooting tool in 2k and XP. That is the context in which I proffered my advise.

Sorry for the delay in answering...lost the topic!

You can uninstall most programs, including the Norton products, using the Add/Remove Programs control panel.

As long as your system is up to date (using Microsoft Update), the Windows firewall is active, and you have working antivirus software, you should be no less protected than with the Norton/Symantec products installed.
