At university I have broadband connection provided in my accommodation, through which I can use MSN and other programs, ie the connection works fine but cannot access internet explorer as it is provided by freeserve and I am not using freeserve connection anymore... Have deleted all of freeserve software (I think) and reset internet explorer and done everything else I can think of. Any ideas anyone?

The customizations from Freeserve should not cause any difficulties.
Have you checked the connection settings for IE? Tools>Internet Options should show your oniginal connection.
Be wary of strong drink. It may make you shoot at tax collectors, and miss!
