A few days ago I noticed my startup list on msconfig shows several entries of just square blocks under the "startup item" and "command" columns. When I un-check these, restart and look again, more are added as checked start-up items.

Is this malware of some kind? I have run ad-aware and Norton antivirus, and it's still there.

thanks for any suggestions!

The square symbols are used by Windows whenever a screen font cannot reproduce the original correctly. As for what these entries actually are, given the information you presented, its anyone's guess. Entries with odd characters are suspicious however.
After all is invested in correctness, then how does it stand with truth?
