It is slowly dieing
first it started freezing
then it started to reboot all by itself
then when I tried to boot it it couldnt find any drives
sometimes when I try to boot it I just get a black screen
I checked it for viruses - none
I used microsoft meliciouse software removal tool - it said not infected
I also formated the hard drive and reinstalled xp but the problem is so
bad now if I can get it going it crashes within five minutes
now it wont let me type my password so Im stuffed
do you have any non violent suggestions for me?

Oh today I tried to start it and I recieved this message:
Secondary IDE channel No80 conductor cable installed.
CPU is unworkable or has been changed. Please recheck -CPU soft menu.

Check the fan in the power supply and make sure the fan/CPUheatsink is still working and attached to the CPU chip. Starting to see alot of broken P4 plastic mounting brackets for the heatsink assembly. Causes the Silicon to overheat in seconds and shut down the machine.

Thanks for your reply

I swapped the power unit no change
I have now removed or swapped all devices including monitor and CPU
except the motherboard and memory no change
The hard drive worked fine in another computer
would it be a good guess that the motherboard is the culpret ?
does the motherboard battery have any effect
The computer doesnt boot at all anymore
I just have a black screen

Thanks Keith
