Recently (about three days ago) I starting getting a popup while using IE6 that is really a pain in the butt and I am not sure if it is a Microsoft issue or if it is something else.

The popup does not show up all the time but when it does I get it 3 or even 4 times in a row.

It reads: SECURITY WARNING
The current webpage is trying to open a site on the Internet.
Do you want to allow this?

It then lists a current page as well as the internet site it is trying to open
which is always shdoclc.dll

I have run Ad-Aware, Spybot, and everything else I can think of. I have also searched the internet on this but am having very little luck finding anything this specific.

I am hoping someone could give me guidence on this problem because it is really a pain in the butt.

SysTray.Exe is a Virus. The system tray in windows does not appear as a running process. Run a virus scan, if you don't have a scanner you can run a free virus scan from Trendmicro here ... http://housecall60.t...orp.asp?id=scan

Remove anything it finds. Let us know if that solves the problem.

sonek, SysTray.exe is not in the list of running processes. You are confusing startups with running processes. It is most likely a legitimate O4. Although it can't hurt to run an online scan as you suggest, we do not want untrained people posting help.

Please see The various helper groups here. Do join the team if you want to post help, we'd love to have you with us. :)

Well, I had already done the virus scan. Actually I did two. One with HouseCall and one with AnitVir Guard.

HouseCall came up with four which I deleted and AntiVir Guard came up with none.

Will wait for further instructions.

Thanks

Hello btsstb, welcome to SWI.

Sorry for this delay, the forum was shutdown temporary for maintenance purposes.

Print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.

Disable SpySweeper:
You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
  • Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options>Uncheck "load at windows startup"
  • Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
  • Uncheck" home page shield".
  • Uncheck ''automatically restore default without notification".
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpySweeper again.

Disable Ewido:
Please disable Ewido, as it may interfere with the fix.

To disable Ewido:

From the system tray:
  • Right-click the system tray icon and uncheck real time protection.

    or From within Ewido -
  • Under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Ewido.

Go to: Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs list. Remove these programs if found.

First of all I would like to thank you for replying to my cry for help. All you people who make this board work are great.

I ended up uninstalling SpySweeper. It was a trial version that had expired so I can just deal with a new version later.

I had found Viewpoint Media Player and removed it. (What is Viewpoint and where does it come from?)

I ran HJT and removed what you had advised.

I went to a2 Scanner and did a scan. It found:

Filename Diagnosis
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\InstaFinder_inst245.exe Adware.InstaFinder.a
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{194EA20D-4817-40B1-A82D-2FD649304FCB}\RP1205\A0124248.dll Adware.WinAD.aw

I let it fix/remove those.

New HJT log is as follows:

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

  • Close all open Explorer windows and browsers

  • Run HijackThis

  • Click on the Scan button and when complete

  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below

  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button

  • When complete and all files removed, close the application.

Submit a fresh HijackThis log for review.

First of all I would like to thank you for replying to my cry for help. All you people who make this board work are great.

I ended up uninstalling SpySweeper. It was a trial version that had expired so I can just deal with a new version later.

I had found Viewpoint Media Player and removed it. (What is Viewpoint and where does it come from?)

I ran HJT and removed what you had advised.

I went to a2 Scanner and did a scan. It found:

Filename Diagnosis
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\InstaFinder_inst245.exe Adware.InstaFinder.a
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{194EA20D-4817-40B1-A82D-2FD649304FCB}\RP1205\A0124248.dll Adware.WinAD.aw

I let it fix/remove those.

New HJT log is as follows:

I downloaded and installed the host file as you suggested and then tried both the "Minimum" setting and the "Accept all Cookies" setting and I am still getting the same issue. Is there something I did wrong?

Download this .reg file to a temporary place, like Desktop.
http://www.spywarein...tools/IEFIX.reg
Close all other windows and browsers
Double-click on it and answer Yes.
This will restore all the default Search settings for I. E.

Let me know how it goes.

p.s. Please use this button "ADD Reply". Its easier to read. Thanks.

Sorry about the reply thing.

I tried what you said but I still get it. Not all the time mind you. After I downloaded and ran it I opened up IE and just started clicking on some of the favorites and it seemed to be working fine but then I got to a stamp collector site and I got the warning again.

Download Silent Runners - http://www.silentrun....org/index.html
Place it in it's own folder.
Double-click "Silent Runners.vbs", it will create a text file.
Note: if you get a pop-up warning about a "script" file, ignore and allow it to run completely.
Post the content of the text file back to this thread.

I want to find more about these items.

Do you by any chance have your own Home page with a hit counter on it?

Let me see this.

Download the Registry Search Tool from here:
http://www.billsway....les/RegSrch.zip

Unzip to your Desktop and double click on regsrch.vbs
(if you have script protection, please allow this to run)

In the dialog that opens enter the following:
orighomepage

Press 'OK'

The search will run for a while then alert you when it is finished.

Press 'OK' and copy the contents of the WordPad window and post in this thread.

Repeat the seach this time look for:

homepage2

Press 'OK' and copy the contents of the WordPad also.

Copy the results back to this thread.

OK, I read it and understand that it is a security issue with Window XP however I am not sure how to change it. I really find them a pain when they pop up and would like to eliminate them. I understand that there is a change I could make to the registry however I am not too comfortable with changing it myself.

Could you provide some guidance on this. I know that it is there for my own protection but it really is a pain. It even pops up on Microsoft sites. I can't believe that I am the only one who seems to have an issue with this. There must be a way that it can still run but without all the popups.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I do not have access to a windows XP so I would like to see this key from your computer.

From the Start/Run box execute
REGEDIT.EXE

This will open the Registry Editor.
Navigate to the key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Lockdown_Zones\0
"2101"=dword:00000001

Highlight the key select the Registry from the menu and export it.
Save it as myregfix.reg.

Open NotePad and copy/paste the content of the .reg file back to this thread.

I went back to this article.
http://windowsxp.mvp...ie/zoneelev.htm

In the example you will see.

<a href="http://www.google.co...e.com">Site</a>
Security Warning appears (if google is in Trusted sites list)

What are the sites in your Internet Explorer Trusted sites.?

If any, remove them one by one. See if you can find the culprit.

I went into IE and checked on the trusted sites. I had none listed. I read again the article and starting doing some poking around. It's not exactly the same but this is what I did.

In IE, under Tools/Options/Security I went to the custom settings for Internet.

Almost at the bottom of the list is

"Web sites in less privilaged web content can navigate into this zone"

With that there are three choices, Disable, Enable, Prompt.

Mine was set to prompt. I changed it to Enable and it seems to have cleared up the problem. At least I hope it has. I went back to the sites where I knew I was getting the warning and it did not reappear.

Thanks for all your help. I think you can close this one off now.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the feed back.

This must be a XP security setting with SP2. I'm using Windows 2000 Pro. and that setting does not show up.

How did I get infected in the first place?

You usually get infected because your security settings are too low.

Here are a number of recommendations that will help tighten them, and which will contribute to making you a less likely victim:

1.) Watch what you download!
Many freeware programs, and P2P programs like Grokster, Imesh, Kazaa and others are amongst the most notorious, come with an enormous amount of bundled spyware that will eat system resources, slow down your system, clash with other installed software, or just plain crash your browser or even Windows itself. If you insist on using a P2P program, please read This Article written by Mike Healan of Spywareinfo.com fame. It is an updated and comprehensive article that gives in-depth detail about which P2P programs are "safe" to use.

2.) Go to Internet Explorer > Tools > Windows Update > Product Updates, and install ALL High-Priority Security Updates listed.
If you're running Windows XP, that of course includes the Service Pack 2! If you suspect your computer is infected with Malware of any type, we advise you to not install SP2 if you don't already have it. You can post a HijackThis log on our Forums to get free Expert help cleaning your machine. Once you are sure you have a clean system, it is highly recommended to install SP2 to help prevent against future infections.

It's important to always keep current with the latest security fixes from Microsoft.
Install those patches for Internet Explorer, and make sure your installation of Java VM is up-to-date. There are some well known security bugs with Microsoft Java VM which are exploited regularly by browser hijackers.

3.) Open Internet Explorer and go to Internet Options > Security > Internet, then press "Default Level", then OK.
  • Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".

Now you will be asked whether you want ActiveX objects to be executed and whether you want software to be installed.
Sites that you know for sure are above suspicion can be moved to the Trusted Zone in Internet Option > Security.

So why is ActiveX so dangerous that you have to increase the security for it?
When your browser runs an activex control, it is running an executable program. It's no different from doubleclicking an exe file on your hard drive.
Would you run just any random file downloaded off a web site without knowing what it is and what it does?

4.) Install Javacool's SpywareBlaster

It will protect you from most spy/foistware in it's database by blocking installation of their ActiveX objects.

Download and install, download the latest updates, and you'll see a list of all spyware programs covered by the program (NOTE: this is NOT spyware found on your computer)
Press "Enable All Protection", and you're done.
The spyware that you told Spywareblaster to set the "kill bit" for won't be a hazard to you any longer.
Although it won't protect you from every form of spyware known to man, it is a very potent extra layer of protection.
Don't forget to check for updates every week or so.

5.) Let's also not forget that Spybot Search & Destroy has the Immunize feature which works roughly the same way. Another feature within Spybot is the TeaTimer option. This option immediately detects known malicious processes wanting to start and terminates them. TeaTimer also detects when something wants to change some critical registry keys and gives you an option to allow them or not.

6.) Microsoft now offers their own free malicious software blocking tool. Windows AntiSpyware improves Internet browsing safety by guarding over fifty (50) ways spyware can enter your PC.

7.) Another excellent program by Javacool we recommend is SpywareGuard.
It provides a degree of real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.

8.) IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. Another good hosts program is mvpshosts. This little program packs a powerful punch as it block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers. For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial.

*It is important to note that all of the above programs/files can be run simultaneously on your system. They will work together in layers, so to speak, to help protect your computer. However, the following suggestions are designed to only run one of each. It is not a good idea to run more than one firewall, and one anti-virus program. Running more than one of these at a time can cause system crashes, high system usage and/or conflicts with each other.*

9.) It is critical that you use a firewall to protect your computer from hackers. We don't recommend the firewall that comes built in to Windows. It doesn't block everything that may try to get in, and the entire firewall is written to the registry. As various kinds of malware hack the Registry in order to disable the Windows firewall, it's far preferable to install one of the excellent third party solutions. Three good ones that are freeware to boot are ZoneAlarm, Kerioand Sygate

10.) An Anti-Virus product is a necessity. There are many excellent programs that you can purchase. However, we choose to advocate the use of free programs whenever possible. Some very good and easy-to-use free A/V programs are AVG, Avast, and AntiVir. It's a good idea to set these to receive automatic updates so you are always as fully protected as possible from the newest virus threats.

11.) Finally, after following up on all these recommendations, why not run Jason Levine's Browser Security Tests
They will provide you with an insight on how vulnerable you might still be to a number of common exploits.

Happy safe computing!!
