For the longest time, IE has been giving me the error "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem, and needs to shut down", and it ONLY gives me that error. It seems to only happen on specific websites or pages though. I downloaded and installed Firefox a little while ago, and it was working fine for a few days, then suddenly decided to randomly freeze. I've since uninstalled it. I'm using Ad-aware and Spybot but neither find anything that can help me. Also I've been playing Maple Story and that to was working fine for about three weeks, and now it likes to randomly close itself, without any errors. Everything else on my PC seems to work fine. I have a hijackthis log, and I really hope someone can help me.

Sorry if this annoys anyone, but I really could use the help. Anyone wanna check out my log? Thanks.. and an update.. Maple Story is running fine now, turns out it was a recent patch that had a bug and they fixed it.

Hi

No suspicious found in your log.

You may wish to consider this.

Optional - VIEWPOINT MANAGER
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.co...cle.php/3561546
Additional info: http://vil.nai.com/v...nt/v_137262.htm
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Fix the items identified in the HijackThis log below. Your call.

I read about that in another post here and I've already gotten rid of viewpoint. Are there any common reasons as to why IE would shut down in specific websites? It happens when I try to use Metacrawler, and even sometimes in Gamefaqs, and it happens while typing out a response in message boards, though that hasn't happened here yet.

When I tried clicking on the button that tests Java, it closed my broswer. No error message, but it just closed..

Check this.

In an Internet Windows, menu, Tools/Internet Options/Advanced tab.

Do you have a Java entry and is it set?

If not sure let me know what you see.

Yes theres a Java entry there. Heres what it looks like:

Java (sun)
Use JRE 1.5.0-01 for <applet> (requires restart)

And it's checked.

Your Java is good. Unless you have an MS Java Machine also and it is set. If so disable that one.

What you can try is to disable the SUN (un check it). Restart the computer.

Then return to is and enable it. Again restarting the computer.
This will ensure that the registry is set correctly.

If still no joy let me see this result.

Download Silent Runners - http://www.silentrun....org/index.html
Place it in it's own folder.
Double-click "Silent Runners.vbs", it will create a text file.
Note: if you get a pop-up warning about a "script" file, ignore and allow it to run completely.
Post the content of the text file back to this thread.

Clean Silent runner log.
  • Please download dllcompare (A scanner to locate hidden DLL files) from this locations:
  • When you execute dllcompare.exe, by default the c:\windows\system32 is selected. This can be changed to scan you entire computer for any file type - Simply select the path and check off the box labelled "Include SubDirectories"
  • Click on "Locate.com" and allow the scan to complete.
  • After the scan has finished click on "Compare" to scan for the files that Windows does not see. This step will take a few minutes to run.
  • If the box at the bottom of the screen contains any files, these are the ones that are hidden - Click on "Make a Log of what was Found".
  • When prompted to "View Log File" click on "Yes".
  • Notepad will open with the log file contents.
  • In Notepad, click on "Edit" => "Select All" => "Edit" = "Copy" and post the contents as a reply to this message.
Include a fresh HijackThis log for review.

Still nothing.

See if you can repair Internet Explorer.

It should be under the Add/Remove Programs.

Select Microsoft Internet Explorer, then select repair and follow the instructions.

Let me know How it goes.

Ok, I tried doing that and I was given an error saying there was some outdated file and I had to restore windows in order to continue. I did that, and went to the Microsoft website and downloaded the service pack and the critical updates, then went back and tried to repair IE through the Add/Remove Program option, and it went through. I restarted and tested things.. and it did nothing. As a matter of fact, I think it may have gotten worser, as it took way more tries to get into this website then previously. I ran spybot and adaware again and it did find some new spyware, but removing them didn't help me at all. I'm at a loss as of what to do, and I am becoming extremely frustrated..

Can you submit a fresh HijackThis log for review after this ordeal.

If you get any error message please note them and let me see the results.

May be what was needed is a reboot or two.

Now this is new in your log.
Do you know what it is?
C:\GMUDSVGW\GMUDSVGW.EXE

If not look at the properties of the file GMUDSVGW.EXE and if not known to you
submit the file in bold to the following link for a scan, then post the results in your next message for me to see.

GMUD is a telnet client I very frequently use. I doubt it's causing me problems.

I just noticed that you do not run any virus protection program.

You need to install one of these free Virus program.
Update at least one a week.

AVG Anti-virus from Grisoft Free Edition.
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/40/lng/ww
Avast! Home Edition. Free Edition.
http://www.avast.com/eng/download.html

Run the program you have downloaded and let me know how things are running.

I know your frustration but I cannot tell you to remove something if I do not see it in your logs.

I actually tried both of those, and though some malaware was found, my problem wasn't fixed.

Sorry bu its not malware.

I suggest you disable some applications and run the computer with out them. If the problem stops then you will know what the cause is.

Check the Hardware/software manufacturers' site and see if you have all the latest drivers.
