Hello all,

A few days ago while searching some crack sites, looking for a crack to some old program i had installed on my computer, i came across Keygen.us. I clicked on this link which was highely recommended as the top crack site on the internet and all hell broke loose!!! About 10 trojans tried to install on my computer(a few managed to escape my av auto protect shield) and about 10 adware programs made their way through.
The unfortunate part was that earlier that nite I was playing online games at zone.com and had my firewall disabled cause most flash games wont start with it enabled(windows firewall). Maybe if i had remembered to re-enable it :weep: i would of escaped having all this crap installed on my computer including spysheriff, coolwwwsearch, and windows.activedesktop. These three "parasites" are very tougth to get rid off, i assure you!!!

In any case please avoid the site KEYGEN.US(VERY EVIL SITE)!!!

Thanks for your attention,

Nick

Suggestion:

Next time you want to go to a site like that, for whatever reason, either have all security systems on high, or use a virtual machine.

(Note: Not an advocation for use of such sites.)

It would not be too surprising if you also were gifted with any number of trojans with payloads that could very well totally comprise your PC and all the information it holds. Most, if not all, crack sites are serious security risks and it would be wise to avoid them all.

Hope is not a method.

Crack sites have programs you can download, which "crack" something, usually the CD-Key to a game, so that it can be run. Some, however, are just Trojans masquerading as crackers.

I would just like to add that under most circumstances and in many countries, software cracks are illegal.

Ah, just don't visit crack sites. :/ They are usually controlled by the l33t h4x0r3s that would just like the screw up your computer. Also, Windows Firewall is complete garbage and you should really get a real firewall. ;) You should never let your firewall down in this day and age. You can probaly find a nice free one such as Kerio

Were you using Firefox or Exploder (Internet Explorer)? I hope not Firefox, cause that would defeat the purpose for using it!

Hi all, and thanks for your replies! To be quite honest, I have been using windows firewall and together with norton av2005 i have been able to keep my computer trouble free for many years! Sure, I am not a computer expert like some people are, but iv found that if you take some basic measures such as keeping your av software updated and run scans once a week, keeping spybot and adaware updated and running scans once a week, keeping the firewall enabled(which unfortunately in this instance i had forgot to re-enable after my gaming session at msn zone), updating windows once a month, and some other basic hard drive maintaince, most if not all the problems are adequately delt with!

So having said this, could you tell me (1)why windows firewall is garbage compared to other firewalls and (2)what is |33t h4x0r3s? I would really appreciate some feedback to these two questions!

P.S I dont really endorse crack sites either, but sometimes they are very useful. And not all crack sites are so malicious as Keygen.us! In fact, several others i had visited were completely benign!

Windows firewall only blocks inbound events, so if you have some malware that tries to communicate from your computer, windows firewall will do nothing to stop it. If you want better protection that is free, get Zone Alarm basic, which has inbound/outbound protection. I've never used it, but I think you'll have to manually configure how programs communicate, which is handled automatically with paid versions of firewalls.

What web browser were you using when you went to that site?

Crack and pRon, the undercover evils of the internet society. Come into my parlor, said the spyder to the fly. Or, as the polite hijacker said, this flight is being temporarily redirected. Please be patient and by the way, you can unbuckle your safety belts.

1.) Drew said it pretty nicely.
2.) l33t h4x0rs= "Elite Hackers" On the internet, it's a way of making fun of immature people who like to cause other people trouble with their knowledge of comps. Well, actualy those people are actualy called "script kiddies" rather than hackers, but I don't want to type script kiddies in l"elite speak". Elite speak is a way of typing used by script kiddies and other idiots. Click here for more info. Apparently people thought it was fun to make the way you write as confusing as possible. But then, most of them probaly dont have proper communications skills anyways. ;o
3.) You may think they are benign, but they probaly are doing stuff right behind your back.
