I bought an external modem, and hooked it up to a serial port, then installed Win98 on VMWare Workstation as a virtual o/s and accessed the internet via nasty old AOL dialup. The external modem works about 30% faster than my internal modem (winmodem) and the virtual environment resets itself to a clean install every time I power-down VMWare Workstation. I used the 'Custom Install' settings on the Win98 o/s (the 'Host' machine runs W2K) to keep the size down to around 300megs.
As a side benefit, I uninstalled my Kerio firewall on my host W2K o/s, and disabled all the Windows Services associated with internet access, so my computer now boots faster, and uses only 90meg of memory when I boot-up (it used around 130 meg previously).
Web pages look better than ever, 'cause now I can surf the net without suppressing any functionality for the sake of security. My only concession to modern times is a pop-up blocker.
I highly recommend virtual PC software.
I have defeated spyware!
