I had Norton SystemWorks 2004 Professional and Norton Internet Security and found that my computer was sooo slow!
Also, despite keeping them both up to date, I still ended up with a virus which is how I came to know about this site last year.
I am now using AVG, but have heard really great things about Nod32 recently. Either would be a great choice I am sure.
Don't just get an Anti-Virus though, make sure you get a good firewall too.

We've had to clean/recover her system a couple of times, when it didn't catch things. Lately, her ISP has beefed up their virus/worm/spam screening, so we're hoping AVG will be good enough now.
My mother doesn't keep any financial info on her system, never buys anything online, doesn't use the system for anything other than email, basically.
She's also on dial-up, so if something gets to her, we usually know something's up when it bogs down.
If you check AVG's (and others) record at Virus Bulletin (registration required) http://www.virusbtn.com/index you'll be armed with a good piece of info to help you decide.
