Hi,

No, your log is not clean, you have a worm which will allow a hacker remote access to your PC.

Please follow these instructions.

Download Bill James' Registry Search Tool from here:
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
Unzip it to desktop.

Type setver32 into the search box and click OK.
Post the results here.

Next:

Type Windows Safety into the search box and click OK.
Post the results here.

Download Killbox from here:
http://www.short-med...nload.php?dc=69
Do not run it yet.

Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files". Then please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.

Open Killbox.

Click "Delete on Reboot".
Paste the following into the top "Full Path of File to Delete" box.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\setver32.exe

Click the red-and-white "Delete File".
Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

Your PC should restart, if not, restart it.

Scan with HiJackThis and put a check in the box next to the following item, if still present:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows secure] setver32.exe

Close all browsers and windows, click on ‘fix selected’ and allow HJT to fix this entry.

Restart.

Please run a free online scan with Kaspersky AntiVirus (works only with MS Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher).
Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner and click the "Kaspersky Online Scanner" button (NOT "Kaspersky File Scanner").
  • In the new window that opens, click the "Accept" button to accept the user agreement, install the ActiveX control, and download the program.
  • When you get the Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the "Install" button.
  • When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button lights up with a green arrow, click it.
  • Click on the "Scan Settings" button, and in the next window select the "extended" database, and click Ok.
  • Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.
When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window, and post the text in kavscan.txt in your next reply.

Also:

Scan again with HJT, (with all browsers and windows closed) and post the new log in this thread.

Hi again,

Please first save these directions to the desktop as a text file, because you will need to copy and paste part of them.
Please run Killbox.
Select "Delete on Reboot".

Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\.pif
C:\Documents and Settings\The14thGOD\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\EXVGDMKN\ysb_prompt[1].htm

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

Your PC should restart, if not, restart it.

Now go here:
http://www.microsoft...n/ms03-026.mspx
and install the patch.
Now go here:
http://www.microsoft...n/MS03-007.mspx
and install the patch.
These patches should ensure you don't get hit with this again. Please bear in mind that this is an IRC based infection, so if you're going to use mIRC or similar make sure you have good protection. Make sure your AV is up to date and run regular scans. Also, I can't see a Firewall in your log. Do you have one?

Hi,

No worries, it just means you've already got the patches.

Here's a few security tips for the future:

In order to be better protected in the future, I recommend the following programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX.
http://www.javacools...areblaster.html

SpywareGuard stops Spyware from being installed.
http://www.javacools...ywareguard.html

IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
http://www.spywarewa...m/uiuc/main.htm

All three are very small free programs that you run once, and then just occasionally to check for updates.

Also see
How did I get Infected?

Finally, it is best to update your system regularly, to ensure you have the latest security patches from Microsoft. Update by clicking
here http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
and following the prompts.

Take care.

SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster run in the background, but only use about 3000Kb between them. IE-SPYAD
doesn't use any resources once it's installed.

Open HiJackThis, click the 'Open the Misc Tools section' tab. Click 'Generate Startup log' and post the log here, and I'll see what we can close down at startup.

Ok,

Scan with HiJackThis and put a check in the box next to the following items (none of these need to run at startup, and are accessable through 'All Programs' in the Start menu if needed.)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {81A99149-F047-4090-8AAD-D11FF4EFB734} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ASUS Probe] C:\Program Files\ASUS\Probe\AsusProb.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\Updreg.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTStartup] C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy\Program\CTEaxSpl.EXE /run
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTHelper] CTHELPER.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HostManager] C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\1142844711\ee\AOLSoftware.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ATI Scheduler] C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\MAIN\ATISched.EXE
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.r...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Close all browsers and windows, click on ‘fix selected’ and allow HJT to fix these entries.

Also read this:
http://www.help2go.c...article&sid=211
on Real Player update.

Also suggest you run error checker and defrag:

Do Start > My Computer.
Right-Click on Local Disk C.
Click Properties > Tools.
Under 'Error-Checking' click 'Check Now'.
Under 'Check Local Disk C’ check both boxes and click 'Start'. You will be prompted to restart. Do so. You will get a blue screen on restart, be patient, the error-check takes time, your PC will start normally when it is complete.

Next:

Do Start > My Computer.
Right-Click on Local Disk C.
Click Properties > Tools.
Click on 'Defragment now' and follow the prompts to defragment your disc.

and clean out your temp locations regularly:

Download: CCleaner (freeware)
http://www.majorgeek...wnload4191.html
Once installed, run CCleaner click the Windows [tab]
Select the following:
Posted Image
Next: click Options click the Settings tab
Uncheck: "Only delete files older than 48 hrs.", click Ok
Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then Exit

That should speed things up a bit.

No, I don't know the program, I had a look at it though and it looked quite interesting.
There are plenty of freeware startup managers around:
http://www.snapfiles.../fwstartup.html
you may want to try out.
Also, I use this RAM optimiser: http://www.yourwares...m/software.html
which is useful when using resource-heavy programs like image programs (stops screen freezing and speeds up the programs)

Yes, you'd just set it to auto-free when available RAM drops below a certain point. (I have it set to auto free at 30MB) It certainly improved preformance on FireWorks and Dreamweaver.

Settings > Configure Settings > Memory. Check 'Automatically Free if memory goes below' and enter the amount in MBs in the box.
Check 'Don't autorun if CPU use above' and enter 15% in the box.
Check 'Don't autorun during significant disk usage'

And below, in 'When automatically freeing RAM' check 'Use autofree'

That should do the trick.

If you're getting popups it's nothing to do with that program, I don't recommend programs that come with Adware, nor do install them on my own computer. You asked me for a recommendation and I gave it. If you want to remove it find its folder in Program Files and delete it.
