8-minute boot-up to user-ready condition

Thank you for your service!

It takes approximately 8 minutes from the time I boot up until I can actually use any of the programs on my laptop, a HPzd7310us. I suspect that multiple programs enable themselves for a "quick start", and that's what's taking so long...But I do not know how to prevent/correct.

The computer also performs sluggishly at times, well after start-up, when I'm opening a program such as Outlook, Excel, Opera (which is my default browser), Word, basically anything...It just freezes up and takes 30-60-90 seconds or more to execute what I've asked it to do.

Particular processes that seem to hog resources during startup:
Explorer.exe
Wuauclt.exe
Hpqtra08.exe
Lucallbackproxy.exe
Lucoms~1.exe
Vprosvc.exe
Svchost.exe
Msmpeng.exe

I have read and followed the instructions in the FAQs. A HJT log (taken immediately after my latest start-up, before running any other program) is posted below, as is a AVGAS log.

Norton seems to be soaking up a lot of your resources, I see no reason why you have seven instances of live update running:

Next:

Download: CCleaner (freeware)

Run the installer, and uncheck the option to install Yahoo toolbar (unless you want Yahoo toolbar).
Once installed, run CCleaner click the Windows [tab]
Select the following:
Posted Image
Next: click Options click the Settings tab
Uncheck: "Only delete files older than 48 hrs.", click Ok
Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then Exit

Next:

Download RegSeeker from here:
http://www.snapfiles.../regseeker.html

Open RegSeeker.

Check the 'Backup before Deletion' box
Click on 'Clean the Registry'
Make sure all boxes except “Invalid Sevices (experimental)” are checked.
Click AutoClean and follow the prompts to allow it to run.
You will get a notification when AutoClean has run.
Exit RegSeeker.
[b]Do not try to use any of the other functions on RegSeeker, it is a powerful program with the potential to damage your PC if used incorrectly


Let me know if this improves matters.

Scan again with HJT, (with all browsers and windows closed) and post the new log in this thread.

Ok,

Open up the Norton Protection Center, click on the tab that says, "Norton Antivirus" and click on the section at the bottom that is labeled " Settings". Then click on the link that says, "Automatic LiveUpdate", select configure and UNCHECK THE BOX THAT SAYS, "Run Quick Scan whenever protection updates have been received."

I'm not sure if that's quite correct for your version, I don't use Norton, but apparently this is a known issue, another version of it is:

1. Open Norton Protection Center;
2. Click on Norton Internet Security tab;
3. Click on "Settings";
4. Scroll down and click on "Virus and Spyware Detection Options";
5. Under "Live Update", click on "General Settings";
6. Click to uncheck the "Run Quick Scan whenver protection updates have been received".

Also look around in 'Settings', find "Scan active programs and start-up files" and uncheck it.

Let me know if doing these two things improves matters.

No significant improvement noted. Maybe 6 minutes instead of 8, which I guess is 25% better, which is not insignificant, I suppose. But not what I was hoping for.

Upon startup now, I get a Windows Installer trying to install a Fax dialer and I get a Norton pop-up stating that certain files are missing and it can't scan/run the SystemWorks program or update.

You have a lot of protection software running, which can be counter-productive in terms of performance. As an experiment ( and make sure you are offline when you do this, if you have an 'always on' modem, switch it off)
close down and exit all protection. Firewalls, AV's, Norton and so on.

Restart your computer, and begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Continue to do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the Safe mode menu item, and then press Enter.

How long does it take to boot into safe mode?

I exited all protection per your advice, and upon restart, after about 20 seconds, I got a blue screen which said: :scratchhead:
"Stop: C0000218 {Reg File Folder}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\systemroot\system32\config\software or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Beginning dump of physical memory
Dumping physical memory to disk: [counted from 1 to 100+]"

It then rebooted itself, automatically coming to a black screen with white text that notified me that there was a problem starting Windows. A number of choices of how to proceed were offered: safe mode, safe w/ networking, safe w/ something else; start windows normally, last known good configuration, etc.

I tried safe mode. The following text appeared:

at which point it froze. This happened repeatedly as I'd restart.

I've selected "last Known good Config..." with similar results, just more of the paths like the above filling the screen before it freezes up,

and even "start windows normally" and the screen goes black and it freezes up, no additional text.

At this point, if you could tell me how to access the files on the hard drive, I'd be happy to get what I need off it then see how many passes it can physically withstand from the lawn mower and other vehicles. :techsupport:

notice means the System or Software hive for the Windows XP installation is missing or damaged. In other words, your registry is corrupt or damaged.
I know two ways to repair this, described here:

but you need the XP setup disk to do the easiest, which is a repair install of Windows.
Short of that, taking out the HD and running it through another PC as an external HD should enable you to recover data, but before you trash the PC bear in mind it could well only be Windows that's broken, not the actual hardware of the PC.
If you have a Windows install disk I can walk you through a repair-install. How old is the PC itself?

I purchased the PC in December 2004, so it's roughly 2 years and 4 months old. Aside from the slowness and now total uselessness, it really is a nice laptop. I won't actually trash it, unless my temper gets the best of me. I was kinda blowin' off steam with all the talk about destroying the thing.

I read the linked "kellys-korner" article, but could not use the links therein to access Microsoft info.

I have the Microsoft Windows XP Home SP2 Operating System CD and have booted using the CDROM, going thru a "Setup is loading files" session in order to get to the Recovery Console, where it asks "Which Windows installation would you like to log onto?"

I don't have an answer to that question. Perhaps that's where you'll start walking me through a repair-install?

Per instructions:

No problem...

"...The next screen gives you the option to do a fresh (clean) install or to

a fresh copy without repairing as that will overwrite your data and

This next screen actually says, and let me first note it's for Windows XP Home Edition Setup, not Professional:
"The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer.

Use the UP and DOWN ARROW keys to select an item in the list.

*To set up Windows XP on the selected item, press ENTER.
*To create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C.
*To delete the selected partition, press D.

76317 MB Disk 0 at I'd 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]

C: Partition1 [NTFS] 76309 MB ( 59114 MB free)

Unpartitioned space. 8 MB

ENTER=Install D=Delete Partition F3=Quit"

So, I was not presented with the option of a Repair vs a Fresh Install, at least not on that screen, and I'm leery of selecting Partition1 and pressing ENTER to see if I might be given such an option on the next screen, vs having all of my existing data overwritten.

What do you think?

OK, if you're not presented with the repair option, continuing will start a clean install, as far as I know. There are a couple of options I know to try and get the repair option to work:

Boot from the CD again, and select Recovery Console this time:

it asks "Which Windows installation would you like to log onto?"

Here's what MS says:

1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
4. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
5. At the command prompt, type the appropriate commands to diagnose and repair your Windows XP installation.

For a list of commands that are available in Recovery Console, type recovery console commands or help at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.


select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.

I assume that is Windows XP, what options are listed?

If you can get into Recovery Console type
bootcfg
and press Enter.

Then type Exit to get out, and try the Repair Install again, and see if the repair option is listed.

Per your instructions, I booted from the CD again, selected Recovery Console:

I followed a screen print from the kellys-korner site you referred me to a post or three ago, and selected "1".

I typed "bootcfg" and pressed Enter. I then added a step to your instructions, by doing as http://www.kellys-ko...om/xp_sys32.htm suggested, which addresses the

issue, by renaming software software.bak / copying 1 file / etc. Then rebooted and selected the Repair Install option, as this exercise we embarked on succeeded in having that option presented.

I did the repair install per the webtree.ca link below; everything worked great.

Then I logged on to Windows. I have thus far been unable to find any of my data files. Some of the icons for non-OEM programs I had added to the PC appeared, but double-clicking them garnered error messages such as "path not found", e.g. Outlook.

Opened "My Computer" to find any of my Excel, Word, etc. files -- can't find 'em.

With that, I had to focus on some other tasks. I'm kinda clueless as to what to do next.

The Windows Firewall and Automatic Updates are ON and the Norton AV is OFF. I had disconnected the cable modem power, preventing any online access... That's pretty much where I'm at.

Do I need to update XP w/ SP2/etc.? Am I not looking in the right places for my data files? Or are they gone? Any other comments/answers/advice?

Ok, first of all, congratulations on getting this PC up and running again, that's quite an achievement.

Am I not looking in the right places for my data files? Or are they gone?

Either is a possibililty. Theoretically this is a non-destructive process, but with a corrupt registry there's always a possibility of data loss. My apologies if that is the case, I should have got you to rescue it before the repair, just in case. But we'll have a look for them.

Firstly though, do Start > Run and type in chkdsk and hit OK.
When that has run, then run defrag:
Do Start > My Computer.
Right-Click on Local Disk C.
Click Properties > Tools.
Click on 'Defragment now' and follow the prompts to defragment your disk.

Then go straight to MS updates:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
and install all critical updates, including SP2.

Let me know how this goes.
